Onyekere, popularly known as Fish Magnet, was the managing director of Fish Magnet, a fish business in Anambra. He was also the only son of Chinyere Onyekesi, the Women Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state.
The entrepreneur was attacked last Saturday at his residence in Ezinifite village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.
According to reports, the assailants, who arrived in an ash-coloured Lexus SUV, shot him in the leg before abducting him in his own navy blue Toyota Corolla.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Wednesday that his body was later discovered by the roadside in Awka.
Spokesperson of the command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary investigations showed the victim had been trailed before the attack.
The police said his car was recovered along the Ukwulu–Igbariam Road by a combined team of police officers and local vigilante operatives.
Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed all tactical and intelligence units to intensify efforts to track down the killers. He condemned the incident and assured the public that justice would be served.
The murder has triggered outrage among residents, civil society groups and business owners in Anambra, with many raising alarm over rising insecurity in the South-East.
Social media personality VeryDarkMan has also reacted to the killing. In a viral video, he wept while speaking about the incident and promised to lead a candlelight procession in Awka on August 4.
Onyekere’s tragic death has added to growing calls for improved security across the country, especially in the South-East where kidnapping and violence have become rampant.
