Singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has earned a spot on King Charles III’s exclusive music playlist, The King’s Music Room, with his hit song ‘Kante’ featuring singer Fave.
Curated by King Charles III himself on Monday, the playlist features a mix of genres, including disco, reggae and Afrobeat, with contributions from artistes such as Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones, RAYE and Davido.
Speaking on the significance of the playlist, the 76-year-old stated, “Music has meant a great deal to me throughout my life. I know that is also the case for so many others. It has a remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness and to take us to distant places.
“But perhaps, above all, music can lift our spirits to such a degree, especially when it brings us together in celebration. In other words, it brings us joy. This seemed an interesting and innovative celebration of this year’s Commonwealth Day.”
King Charles III also acknowledged the growing influence of Afrobeats, noting his fondness for Nigerian Pidgin English.
He recalled attempting to deliver a speech in Pidgin during his last visit to Nigeria and expressed admiration for the genre’s increasing global popularity.
“It also features lyrics in Pidgin, which I love in all its forms, and in which I attempted to make a speech when I last visited Nigeria. Thanks to Afrobeats, it is becoming ever more popular around the world,” he said.
Kante is one of the standout tracks from Davido’s Grammy-nominated 2023 album, Timeless.
The King’s Music Room playlist will be available exclusively on Apple Music in honour of Commonwealth Day 2025, set for March 11.
