Darkest day of my life, Crayon loses mom

Singer Crayon has lost his mother, Evelyn Chukwu, describing her death as the darkest day of his life and “an everlasting scar.”

In an emotional message on social media, the Mavin artiste said his mother died on July 4, a day he will never forget.

“My best friend, the best woman I have ever loved, my favourite person in the world. I lost my mum,” he wrote. “July 4th was the darkest day of my life. My soldier, my backbone, my pillar is gone. My biggest motivation is gone.”

Crayon said he spoke with his mother shortly before her death, adding that she sounded healthy and had prayed for him as she always did.

“Ah mummy, seeing you lie lifeless on that hospital bed broke me to pieces – it was my greatest fear. I can’t believe that’s the last image of you I’m ever going to have,” he said.

The ‘Ijo Labalaba’ singer said he has found himself questioning God over her death.

“You always said we should never question God, but that’s all I’ve done since that day. Mummy, I don ask God why tire! Why now? Why you? Why me? Why us? How? After all the suffer wey we don suffer for decades, na now wey God don bless us, you come die leave me?”

Despite his pain, Crayon promised to remain strong and care for his family.

“My angel, as we lay you to rest, I know you’d want me to be strong and to keep pushing. I promise to take care of Naza and the rest of the family,” he wrote.

Crayon, whose real name is Charles Chukwu, was signed to Mavin Records in 2019.

He is known for songs like ‘So Fine,’ ‘Tele’ and ‘Ijo (Laba Laba)’.
