Court sends woman to psychiatric hospital over attempt to jump into Lagos lagoon

A Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Meta on Monday ordered that a 51-year-old textile dealer at Balogun Market, Taiwo Titilayo-Momoh, who attempted to jump into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, be taken to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation.

Prosecutor of the case, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, told the court that the accused attempted suicide on March 24 at about 10.00 a.m. but was rescued by security operatives.

Omisakin said the offence contravened Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 which is punishable by life imprisonment.

The defendant, who was reported to have had sleepless nights after being duped by a bureau-de-change operator to a tune of N18.7 million in 2015, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After hearing the case, Chief Magistrate A.T. Elias admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Elias also directed that the business woman be taken to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation.

The case was adjourned to June 1 for mention.
