Court remands suspect in prison over series of armed robberies in Ekiti

An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, ordered the remand of a 29-year-old man Seyi Akinleye, aka Erin/Elephant, in prison over alleged series of armed robberies.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, directed that Akinleye should be kept in prison custody pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Lawal adjourned the matter to Nov. 14 for mention.

The accused, whose address was not provided, had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Leramo Caleb told the court that the accused committed the offence ‎on or about Sept. 16, in Ado Ekiti.

Caleb alleged that Akinleye robbed about 11 victims of their valuables, valued at N1.6m.

He narrated that the accused broke into the home of one Ojo Enoch and stole his laptop valued at N200, 000.

He said Enoch, who was able to identify the defendant, reported the incident to the police which led to his arrest and the laptop recovered from him.

The prosecutor also said when a thorough search was conducted on Akinleye’s apartment; many stolen items were discovered there.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 2(1), (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act. Cap R2 Laws of Ekiti 2004 and 27 (b)1 of the Firearms Act LFN 2004.
