Content creator Esther Thomas, widely known as Sunshine, has died after complications from a fibroid operation, her family has confirmed.
Her relatives announced her death on social media, saying she died on January 9, following an unsuccessful surgery to remove fibroids. “We the family of Esther Thomas (A.K.A Sunshine), with pain in our hearts, regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved sister and daughter … who passed away on January 9, 2026, after an unsuccessful surgery,” the statement reads.
Sunshine had been experiencing severe stomach pain from late December 2025. She was first taken to Orchid General Hospital in Lagos, where she was given only pain relief medication amid a doctors’ strike. After her condition worsened, she was moved to another facility on January 2 for further care.
Medical scans reportedly showed she had a significantly enlarged fibroid. Doctors at the second hospital advised surgery, which was performed, and was initially described as successful. However, Sunshine developed complications afterward and later died. “According to the doctor, the surgery was successful, but she later developed complications that led to her death,” a fellow content creator said.
Sunshine was known for her skits, modelling, brand engagements and video appearances. Her family said arrangements for her burial are in progress and asked friends and supporters to respect their privacy at this time.
