How Chukwuebuka Enekwechi abandoned the US to win Silver for Nigeria

Heading into Day five of the Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria was missing in the medal standings.

The men’s table tennis team, however, broke that barren streak on Monday by clinching silver.

Being one of the country’s strongest sports, it was pretty much unsurprising, though.

The real shock came moments after when a relatively unknown Chukwuebuka Enekwechi clinched another silver in the Shot Put event.

He emerged second best after throwing a personal best of 21.14m for Nigeria in only his third attempt.

New Zealand’s Tomas Walsh with a throw of 21.41m finished tops while Canada’s Tim Nedow who had a season’s best of 20.91m was third.

Enekwechi’s medal in Gold Coast is his first since switching allegiance to Nigeria.

Prior to representing the Green and White nation, the 25-year-old crafted for the United States of America (USA).

An American born and breed, Enekwechi grew in Laurelton, New York.

He was a champion at every point in life.

As a junior in college, Enekwechi was section champion for shot put and the discus and a two-time sophomore champion.

A notch up to the senior, he was the USATF Youth National Champion for shot put and also the U.S. number one for the weight throw with a mark of 75 feet and eight inches.

Enekwechi transferred that form to the freshman level where he took bronze at the NCAA Championships in the 35-pound weight throw.

As an adult, he was First Team All-American after finishing first at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the hammer throw.

Yet, Enekwechi wasn’t fulfilled; he wanted more.

Ultimately, he has been rewarded with silver at the grand stage.
