Chelsea draw Arsenal in Carabao Cup semi-final

Chelsea will host Arsenal in a Carabao Cup semi-final London derby as Bristol City’s reward for knocking out holders Manchester United is a trip to Manchester City.

Alvaro Morata’s stoppage-time strike sent Chelsea into the Cup last four with a 2-1 defeat of Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Willian had given Chelsea a 13th-minute lead but the Blues invited pressure and Dan Gosling equalised in the 90th minute.

Chelsea attacked from the restart and Eden Hazard back-heeled into the path of fellow substitute Morata, who tucked in to send the Blues through.

Antonio Conte’s men will face Arsenal in a two-legged tie after the Gunners beat West Ham 1-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night courtesy of a Danny Welbeck goal.

Many expected Jose Mourinho’s United to join their Premier League rivals in the final four, but Korey Smith’s stoppage-time strike secured a stunning 2-1 victory for Bristol City.

Joe Bryan gave City a 51st-minute lead but Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalised shortly afterwards. Then, just when extra-time beckoned, Smith was set free by Matty Taylor and delivered the goods.

Their reward is a semi-final tie against Pep Guardiola’s City, who currently lead the top flight by 11 points.

The matches will be played over two legs in the weeks commencing January 8 and January 22.
