Champions League: Tough draws for Premier League teams

Mourinho

Barclays Premier League clubs were handed tough opponents in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw made in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday.

Arsenal will face familiar foes, Barcelona, while Chelsea will be aiming for a revenge mission against French champions, Paris Saint-Germain.

The Gunners have been knocked out at the last 16 stage in the last five consecutive seasons and will have to overcome the holders, whom they lost to back in 2011 having held a 2-1 first-leg lead, if they are to break that trend.

Jose Mourinho’s team on the other hand were eliminated from last season’s competition by Laurent Blanc’s side and must beat the Paris-based club to stand a chance of reviving an already crumbling season by winning the competition.

The last of the English trio, Manchester City made light work of their qualifying group as they edged out Italian champions, Juventus, to top Group D to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side avoided the big guns and has been handed a favourable draw after being pitted against Dynamo Kyiv for a place in the quarter finals.

Rafael Benitez’s Real Madrid, meanwhile, will meet Serie A side, Roma, with Cristiano Ronaldo looking to add to the record-breaking 11 goals he scored in the group stage of the competition.

Juventus have been handed a tricky test against Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, who topped Group F with 15 point.

The first leg will be played on either the 16/17th or 23/24th February before the second legs take place on the 8/9th and 15/16th March.
