Champions League: Onyekuru wins battle of Nigerians against Idowu

Henry Onyekuru

Without the luxury of Super Eagles stars in the Champions League, Nigerians were glued to Turkey when Galatasaray faced Lokomotiv Moscow on Tuesday.

On loan Everton forward, Henry Onyekuru, welcomed Brian Idowu to the Vodafone Park.

Although the former didn’t taste action from the start, he emerged 3-nil victorious at the end of the game.

Garry Rodrigues gave the Cimboms the perfect start after opening the scoring with a ferocious shot from outside the area in the ninth minute.

Eren Derdiyok doubled Galatasaray’s lead in the 67th when he curled a free kick around the Lokomotiv wall. Only Guilherme’s outstretched hand stopped Rodrigues making it 3-0 on a breakaway in the 75th.

Selcuk Inan scored Galatasaray’s third from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Guilherme brought down Emre Akbaba on a counterattack.

Idowu featured for the entire duration of the game while Onyekuru replaced Younès Belhanda in the 75th minute.

Both will be up against Schalke 04 and FC Porto respectively in Matchday two.
