Champions League: Manchester United in tricky situation, Juventus beat City to advance

Lous van Gaal

Manchester United’s hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages were severely dented by a goalless draw with PSV at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

United headed into their penultimate Group B fixture knowing three points would secure a last-16 spot, yet now likely need a win at leaders Wolfsburg on December 8 to progress following Wednesday’s disappointing stalemate.

Wayne Rooney returned to United’s starting XI after missing Saturday’s 2-1 win at Watford, but Louis van Gaal’s side could not find a way through PSV’s defence as the Eredivisie champions held on for a valuable point.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard both wasted presentable chances as the draw leaves Wolfsburg a point ahead of United in first, with the Red Devils likely to need a win in Germany to reach the last 16.

Wolfsburg are on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages after winning 2-0 at Ahmed Musa’s CSKA Moscow.

Substitute Andre Schurrle scored the second having inspired an own goal from Igor Akinfeev earlier in the second half, securing three points in one of this season’s most competitive groups.

Juventus advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League and moved above Manchester City into top spot in Group D, with a 1-0 win over the Premier League side on Wednesday.

Mario Mandzukic scored the only goal of an entertaining game in the 18th minute, and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon did well to prevent City from levelling.
