American rapper, Cardi B and her male colleague, Childish Gambino, made history at the 2019 Grammy Award held in the Staples Centre on Sunday.

Cardi B became the first solo female artiste to win best rap album at the music award for her 2018 debut album, Invasion of Privacy.

While giving her acceptance speech, she said: “The nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed,” which caused laughter in the audience.

Childish Gambino’s widely praised single “This Is America” won the prestigious Grammy awards for song and record of the year, becoming the first rap song to win the awards.

The artiste did not attend the event and declined an invitation to perform at the Grammys despite his nominations.

This Is America” beat fellow category heavyweights Drake, Cardi B and Lady Gaga to win the award.

Nigeria’s Seun Kuti was nominated in the ‘World Music’ category, which he lost to South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir.
