Candlelight procession held for entrepreneur Fish Magnet in Awka

A candlelight procession is underway in Awka, Anambra State, in honour of the late Ifesinachi Onyekere, also known as Fish Magnet, who was killed after being abducted.

The procession, led by social media personality Martin Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), began at Aroma Junction and is heading toward the Fish Magnet Office at Ring Road. Participants in the procession are being escorted by police officers.

The event is taking place despite a warning issued by the Anambra State Police Command, which earlier advised against any procession or memorial gathering for Fish Magnet.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police said the family of the deceased had publicly distanced themselves from such events.

The police warned VDM against actions that could cause unrest, stating that no individual would be allowed to disrupt public peace.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the state commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had urged organisers to respect the privacy of the family and allow law enforcement to carry out its duties.

According to Mr Ikenga, the police are working with other security agencies to maintain order and have intensified efforts to track down those responsible for Onyekere’s abduction and death.

He added that anyone found inciting unrest, either online or offline, would face prosecution.

Fish Magnet was abducted on July 26 at his home in Okpuno, Awka South LGA. His body was later found.

He was the only son of APGA woman leader Esther Onyekere.

In a previous statement, the Anambra State Government condemned the killing and promised to ensure justice is served.

Commissioner for information Law Mefor during a condolence visit to the Onyekere family, said the vehicle used in the abduction had been recovered and security operatives were on the trail of the suspects.

The candlelight procession is still ongoing.
