CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba advance; Akwa bow out

Enyimba have progressed to the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup after a scoreless stalemate against Bidvest Wits on Wednesday in Calabar.

The People’s Elephants produced a stunning display to hold the South Africans to a 1-1 draw in the first-leg.

They only needed to avoid defeat and a high-score draw to advance, which they did.

Despite playing with a man advantage for most of the second half, Enyimba failed to break the duck.

Even a late spot-kick wasn’t converted by the hosts, taken by Augustine Oladapo.

However, in nearby Uyo, Akwa United weren’t that fortunate despite winning 3-1 against Al Hilal.

The Promise Keepers were beaten 2-0 in Sudan and exited the competition due to away goal rule.

AI-Hilal skipper Basheer stunned Akwa in the 28th minute, tapping in a rebound after goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke had spilled a fierce shot.

Michael Ibe restored parity for the Promise Keepers in the final minute of the first half.

Four minutes into the second half, Ibe finished off Haggai Katoh’s delightful pass to make it 2-1 for Akwa United.

Home Eagles forward Gabriel Okechukwu came close to make it 3-1 for Akwa United but his free-kick was tipped away from the Al Hilal goalkeeper.

Ibe completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute from the spot after Aniekeme was fouled in the box by an Al Hilal player.
