C.J. Obasi’s Mami Wata bags NAACP Image Award nomination for best film after Oscar snub

C.J Obasi

Mami Wata, a film directed by C.J. Obasi, has been nominated in the Outstanding International Motion Picture category at the NAACP Image Awards after failing to make the shortlist for the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the 2024 Oscars.

The movie producer shared the good news in an Instagram post on Friday.

He wrote: “MAMI WATA is nominated in the “Outstanding International Motion Picture” category of the NAACP Image Awards. This one is so special. So thankful to the @naacpimageaward for this huge honor. Thank you to my family, team, friends and supporters. This is for us.”

Mami Wata is nominated alongside Anatomy of a Fall, Brother, Rye Lane and Society of the Snow.

Many were hopeful when the Nigerian Official Section Committee (NOSC) picked the Sundance Festival award-winning film as its contender for the 96th Academy Awards’ International Feature Film (IFF) category.

However, in a statement on December 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the first shortlist of 15 films in the IFF category of next year’s Oscars but Mami Wata did not make the cut.
