Burna Boy explains inspiration for tattoos in interview with GQ

Pop musician, Burna Boy, has explained the inspiration behind his numerous tattoos in an interview with fashion magazine, GQ.

The 28-year-old explained that the body art was inspired by a variety of events and happenings in his life as well as to pay homage to his idols.

“The first one is a Psalm from the bible. I was just in a dark place and this was the Psalm that felt like I wrote it at that time. This is the tattoo I got after my third American tour. It’s like a rock star tattoo. On my fingers, we have ‘God’s love’ that’s like the fuel. Then this is like a brick wall, it has family written pon it then it also has some of my family members name on it.

“Then this is like a bleeding heart but it still shines so it shows that even with all the…something might be shining but it still bleeds. Then this is Fela Kuti, he is like my hero, he is like the best musician that ever lived,” he said.

Burna Boy had, on Tuesday night, appeared on American talk show, The Daily Show, hosted by South African comedian, Trevor Noah.

He interrupted Trevor at the beginning of the interview to share his first meeting with the comedian.

“This guy is a legend cos I’m from Nigeria and I still used to spend a lot of time in South Africa,” Burna Boy began.

He continued saying that in 2014 he was on a boat trip in Cape Town with a girl who wanted to join the crowd to meet Trevor.

Burna said he asked the girl to ‘Stay put’ when she requested to go and meet Trevor.

 The singer said he began following Trevor’s programme after that encounter.

“I appreciate that. Most people would be like that was when I started hating you,” Trevor replied as they both shared a laugh.

Burna Boy recently dropped his album African Giant which became the highest-ranking African album in the United Kingdom.
