Zainab Aliyu released from Saudi detention

Zainab Aliyu with Nigerian consular officials after release by Saudi authorities

Zainab Aliyu has been released from detention in Saudi Arabia, new media aide to the President, Bashir Ahmad, has said.

Mr. Ahmad had earlier on Tuesday said that the Federal Government had hired lawyers in Saudi Arabia to join in efforts to secure Ms. Aliyu’s release.

Zainab, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, was arrested at a Saudi airport after a banned drug, tramadol, was found in her bag.

She claimed unknown persons planted it in her luggage.

The student had reportedly travelled from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in company with her mother, Mrs. Maryam Aliyu, and sister, Hajara Aliyu, but was arrested over allegations that a bag bearing her nametag contained the unlawful substance.
