Many people are feared dead after two suspected female suicide bombers detonated explosives at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State in the early hours of Monday.

It comes hours before the Nigerian military takes local and international observers on a one-day tour of Boko Haram’s former fortress, Sambisa Forest

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack which bears the signature of the terror group.

The first blast occurred at a mosque within the staff quarters at about 5:35am as Muslim worshippers were concluding the early morning prayer.

The second attack was said to have happened near the university’s 5th gate usually used by pedestrians.

Monday’s attack is the first major onslaught on the university since the insurgency began over seven years ago.

Students of the institution are currently writing their end of first semester examinations.
