Boniface begins rehabilitation after knee surgery in Austria

Victor Boniface

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has begun his rehabilitation process following knee surgery in Innsbruck, Austria.

He underwent the procedure on Saturday after weeks of consultations and has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The surgery addressed a recurring issue in his right knee that affected his availability during the campaign.

Boniface confirmed the start of his recovery in a short video shared on Snapchat on Sunday.

In the clip, he was seen working with a physiotherapist, carrying out light leg stretches and walking with the aid of a support device.

The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen.

He made 11 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen before the injury, recording two assists and failing to score.

He started only two league matches and logged 325 minutes across all competitions before his season was cut short.

Werder Bremen had earlier confirmed that Boniface would miss the rest of the campaign after opting for surgery.

The club also stated that the loan agreement will remain in place until the end of the season, with the forward contracted to the club until June 30.

Boniface sought further medical opinions before deciding to go ahead with the operation earlier this month.

No timeline has been given for his return to competitive football, as he focuses on recovery ahead of next season.

Following the surgery, several Super Eagles players sent goodwill messages to the striker.

In a video shared on Instagram, team captain Wilfred Ndidi wished him a quick recovery, saying he would return stronger.

Vice-captain Victor Osimhen also sent a message of support, expressing confidence in Boniface’s return.

Other national team players, including Akor Adams, Raphael Onyedika, Samuel Chukwueze and Paul Onuachu, also encouraged the forward.

Boniface last featured for the Super Eagles in May 2025.

The injury adds to a series of setbacks in his career, having previously suffered two anterior cruciate ligament injuries since turning professional.
