Boko Haram attacks Yobe governor Mai Buni’s convoy

Mala Buni of Yobe State

Suspected Boko Haram fighters on Saturday evening ambushed the security team which was part of the convoy of Yobe State Governor Mai Buni, killing one policeman and injuring six others along the Jakana-Mainok expressway in Borno State.

Reports say the security team escorted the governor to Maiduguri for the 24th convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

Buni stayed back in Maiduguri after the ceremony preparatory for another trip to Abuja for an official engagement.

However, his security team which returned to Yobe was attacked.

Confirming the attack, the governor’s spokesman Mamman Mohammed said: “They fired some shots, but the security escorting the governor’s official vehicles back to Damaturu exchanged fire with them, but three policemen sustained injuries.”

He added that the security operatives repelled the attack and that those injured were responding to treatment.

PUNCH gathered from a security source who was part of the convoy that the suspected Boko Haram terrorists targeted the governor and also had their eyes on some of the military and police weapons and ammunition in the convoy.
