Blasphemy: Falana finally gets case details of Kano singer

Femi Falana

Kano State Judiciary says it has handed over certified copies of the Sharia Court judgment to rights lawyer Femi Falana to enable him appeal the sentencing of singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death by hanging for blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.

Spokesman of Kano judiciary Babajibo Ibrahim confirmed the development on Thursday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Mr Sharif-Aminu has until September 9 to appeal the judgment.

Mr Ibrahim said the certified copies of the judgment were presented to Falana’s representative on Wednesday in Kano.

He explained that the state judiciary received an application by the rights lawyer, requesting details of the Sharia Court judgment to enable him appeal the judgment.

“The judiciary received a request from Mr Femi Falana’s representative on Tuesday and certified copies of the judgment were made available to him on Wednesday,’’ he said.

A Sharia Court in Kano on August 10 sentenced 22-year-old Sharif-Aminu to death by hanging after his conviction for blasphemy.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on August 27 indicated his readiness to sign the death warrant if the convict failed to appeal the judgment at the expiration of the 30-day grace.
