Basketball: D’Tigress make World Cup history

Nigeria’s national female basketball team, D’Tigress, Sunday, made history with their first-ever victory at the ongoing FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 in Spain’s Canary Islands.

Otis Hughley’s ladies beat Turkey 74-68 in a Group B match.

The last time the D’Tigress participated at the global showpiece was 12 years ago.

They exited the competition losing all six games.

Australia leads the poll with two wins, while Turkey and Nigeria are tied at second place with one win each.

Argentina, meanwhile, are at the bottom of the group with no win.

Turkey will play against Australia while Argentina will face Nigeria on Tuesday in their third and last matches of the group.

Turkey had defeated Argentina 63-37 in a Group B match while Australia beat Nigeria 86-68.

Sixteen teams in four groups are competing in the tournament on the island of Tenerife, set to end on Sept. 30.

The group leaders will directly qualify for the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-place teams will play an elimination match to advance to the quarterfinals.
