AWCON 2018: Super Falcons eye World Cup slot

Super Falcons coach, Thomas Dennerby, has revealed that his team’s priority is to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerians battle Cameroon on Tuesday in the first semi-final of the ongoing Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Ghana.

A victory for the defending champions would automatically seal their place in next year’s showpiece in France.

And Dennerby, who led his native Sweden to the global showpiece, is aiming to repeat that feat with Nigeria.

“We are preparing like we always have, our target has always been securing a World Cup ticket first, and we are focused on that,” he said in Monday’s press conference.

“Every head coach is always under pressure but it’s good I’m an old man so I can deal with it.

“We have to approach the game with all seriousness otherwise we could end up surprised.”

The Falcons skipper, Onome Ebi, echoed her manager’s sentiments, expressing optimism ahead of the clash with the Indomitable Lionesses.

” The team spirit is very good, my teammates are all training well and we are preparing well.

“The teams have all improved, the Cameroon team we will play have improved from 2016, the gap is narrowing and we have to work as hard as ever to get the victory.”
