Actress Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara, has been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
She died in the early hours of Thursday, according to her family.
The news of her death was announced by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, in a video message on Thursday, in which he appreciated members of the public and colleagues in the film industry for their support during her illness. Her health challenges had drawn public attention in recent weeks after colleagues appealed for financial assistance for her medical treatment.
Videos from her burial show Islamic clerics performing final rites as family members and sympathisers gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects. Many present were visibly emotional as prayers were offered for the late actress.
She was wrapped a white clothing after which she was wrapped in native mat before she was placed in the burial ground that was dug for her.
Fans and colleagues have since continued to mourn her, expressing grief over her death across social media.
Her colleague Aunty Ramota shared that she had planned to pay her a visit before hearing news of her death.
She wrote on Instagram, “My dear friend Aunty Hajara has gone. I was coming to see you with my sister but you couldn’t wait.
Rest in perfect peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️”
Ajara was known for her roles in Yoruba films and skits, where she became popular for playing comic and supporting characters. Her death followed a prolonged illness that had prompted support from colleagues and fans in the days leading up to her passing.
