The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has concluded plans to extend its ongoing industrial action by two months.

An official who did not want to be named told Premium Times that the decision was reached at a prolonged meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) which started on Sunday and ended early Monday morning.

The NEC meeting was held at the union’s national secretariat at the University of Abuja.

“Yes, we have extended the strike by eight weeks pending when the Nigerian government would find the university system worthy of the desired attention,” the source was quoted to have said.

This comes as the Federal Government had noted that it would not be forced to negotiate at “gunpoint”.

The union had on February 14, 2022, declared a “total and comprehensive” four-week warning strike. It said that the industrial action was inevitable as the government had failed to implement the agreement it signed with the union in 2009.
