Asisat Oshoala becomes first African female footballer to reach 1m Instagram followers

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has become the first African female footballer to reach 1 million Instagram followers.

The 28-year-old recently made headlines when she netted the Super Falcons’ third goal in a 3-2 win against hosts Australia last Thursday at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Barcelona Femini star scored the third goal in the 72nd minute of the game leading the Falcons to victory against the Matildas.

Oshoala celebrated her goal wildly by taking off her shirt. Her prowess and form of celebrating the win sparked a massive social media debate which ultimately saw her social media following on Instagram increase.

On Friday, she revealed on Instagram that her father was not happy she took off her jersey to celebrate.

“My dad is definitely not happy with my choice of celebration but then again, Life is a collection of MOMENTS,” she said.

As of Sunday, the post has generated over 200,000 likes and 11,000 comments, some of which were from celebrities appealing to her father to forgive her.

Oshoala is a five-time winner of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Player of the Year.
