Asagba of Asaba in Delta State Obi Joseph Edozien has died at the aged of 99.

Although, the monarch passed on on Wednesday, an official announcement is not expected until after seven days.

However, a palace source confirmed the monarch’s death to PUNCH.

“It is true that the Asagba is no more. But we respect our tradition so much. Our tradition forbids the official announcement of the monarch’s death before seven days,” the source said.

On January 9, 2024, 1000 trees were planted in the Asagba’s honour as part of the activities lined up for the celebration of his 100 birthday anniversary.

The late monarch was born on July 28, 1924 in Asaba to the family of Edozien, who were said to be the direct descendants of Nnebisi the founder of Asaba.

In 1997, the Asagba was elected as chairman of Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo conferred the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on him in 2003.

He was also the chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
