Army tribunal demotes General Adeniyi who asked for weapons to fight Boko Haram

A military court martial in Abuja has convicted a former Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole Maj.-Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi following a video of him lamenting poor conditions of troops.

Adeniyi appeared in a video that went viral in March requesting for more weapons to carry out the fight against Boko Haram.

He was immediately redeployed to the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja after the video.

On Monday, a military court martial found Adeniyi guilty of violating social media guidelines and ordered that he be demoted by at least three years.

The tribunal also found Adeniyi’s aide, Tokunbo Obanla guilty and sentenced him to 28 days in jail with hard labour.

Obanla, who Adeniyi said was in possession of his phone at the time of the incident, reportedly admitted to posting the video on social media in error.

Both convictions are subject to confirmation by the military board before they can take effect.
