Anglican priest jailed 5 years for defiling 5-year-old girl

Prison

An Ado-Ekiti State High Court has sentenced a priest of the Anglican Communion, Gabriel Asateru, to five years in prison for defiling a minor.

Asateru, 53, was charged by the police for defilement.

The priest denied the charges when he was first arraigned in January 2018.

Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde jailed the Anglican priest on Monday, saying the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

The judge also ordered the convict to pay N50, 000 as fine as stipulated by the Child Rights Law, 2006.

The court heard that the convict committed the offence on or about December 23, 2016, at Ayebaju Street, Ifisin Ekiti.

The state counsel, Ronke Odefola, told the court that Asateru defiled the five-year-old when he visited her parents.

The offence contravened the provisions of Section 31 of the Child Rights Law Cap C7, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2005.
