The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has condemned the killing of Venerable Edwin Achi, a priest of the Diocese of Kaduna who died in captivity after his abduction on October 28.
The cleric was kidnapped with his wife and daughter from their home in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The kidnappers later demanded N600 million ransom. His wife and daughter remain in captivity.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Primate of the Church, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, said the abduction and killing of the cleric is a reminder of the continued violence affecting communities across the country.
He said the incident “wounds the conscience of our nation” and called for urgent action against insecurity.
Rev. Ndukuba urged the government to identify and punish those sponsoring, funding or enabling attacks in the northern region and other parts of the country.
He paid tribute to Achi, describing him as a servant of God whose life of service ended abruptly.
He added that the continued detention of the priest’s wife and daughter deepens the family’s trauma.
“They must be released forthwith to join us in laying their beloved husband and father to rest,” he said.
The Primate extended prayers to Nigerians still held by kidnappers and called for the safe return of all abducted persons.
He described Achi’s killing as a “senseless act of evil,” saying such violence has no place in a society seeking peace.
He called on the Federal Government, security agencies and international partners to intensify efforts to dismantle networks behind banditry, terrorism and religious persecution.
“Those who underwrite or support these atrocities must be shamed, blacklisted and severely punished. The roots of this evil must be confronted with the full weight of justice,” he said.
Ndukuba also urged political leaders and security operatives to increase efforts to stop acts that threaten national stability and unity.
He expressed hope that Achi’s death would become a rallying point for stronger action against insecurity.
“May the God of all comfort uphold his family, strengthen His Church and heal our broken nation,” he prayed.
The Anglican Diocese of Kaduna earlier confirmed Achi’s death in a statement, announcing the cancellation of its Stand Up for Jesus 2025 programme in his honour.
Achi hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.
