Ambode sets up panel to investigate Ita-Faji building collapse

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has set up an investigative and advisory committee on the collapsed building at No. 53, Massey Street, Ita-Faji, Lagos Island.

Commissioner for physical planning and urban development, Rotimi Ogunleye, inaugurated members of the committee in Alausa on Tuesday.

Mr Ogunleye said members were carefully chosen to provide government with informed advice on the steps to take in respect of the collapsed building.

No less than 20 pupils of a school and adults died when the three-storey building collapsed on March 13.

Ogunleye said the owner and developer of the collapsed building had been invited to the ministry.

He said that out of 149 buildings marked for demolition across the state, 48 were located on Lagos Island and 16 had already been demolished.

The commissioner emphasised that the government had not left people stranded with the demolition exercise as notices to quit had already been served them since 2018.

He also said the state had made provisions for displaced persons in case of emergency at the state resettlement centres.

The committee will have two weeks to work on the mandate.

Chairman of the committee, Wasiu Olokunola, a certified civil and structural engineer, promised that they would carry out the task with utmost professionalism.
