Ondo State governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has rewarded three Super Falcons team members of Ondo origin with a total of N60 million and a house in honour of their contribution to Nigeria’s recent triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The reception, held on Monday in Akure, celebrated defender Oluwatosin Demehin, the team’s media officer Mary Akinsola and team secretary Mary Oduboku.

Demehin received N30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba Ile in Akure North, while Akinsola and Oduboku got N15 million each.

The Super Falcons clinched their 10th WAFCON title in Morocco on Saturday, July 26, after a hard-fought 3-2 victory against hosts Morocco.

Governor Aiyedatiwa praised the trio for their outstanding representation of Ondo State and Nigeria on the continental stage.

“Your achievements are a testimony to your hard work, talent and perseverance,” the governor said.

“You have really made us proud. Your victory is not just a triumph for yourselves, but a huge honour for Ondo State and Nigeria.”

The governor lauded Demehin for her defensive efforts, praised Akinsola for her media work promoting the team and commended Oduboku for her behind-the-scenes dedication to the team’s administration.

He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for the national recognition accorded to the Super Falcons following their historic win.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Omoyofunmi, applauded the governor for honouring the athletes, assuring continued support for sports development in the state.

Also speaking at the event, chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, Sunday Dele-Ajayi, hailed the event as unprecedented, noting it was the first time any governor in the state had formally celebrated Falcons players of Ondo origin.

In an emotional speech, Demehin thanked the state for the recognition, describing the WAFCON victory as a turning point in her career.

“This hosting makes it even more special,” she said.

“Sunshine Queens gave me the start I needed, and there are many more like me waiting for their chance. This gesture will definitely strengthen women’s football in Ondo State.”

Demehin, who previously played for Sunshine Queens FC before joining Stade de Reims in France, has been praised for her composure and consistency in Nigeria’s backline throughout the tournament.
