Abba Yusuf resigns from NNPP ahead of APC defection

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), ahead of his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor’s resignation was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa.

The statement said the decision followed internal crises within the NNPP and the need to protect the interests of Kano State.

Governor Yusuf tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area.

He stated that his resignation took effect from January 25.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the letter read.

The governor expressed appreciation to the party for the platform it provided him since 2022 and the support he received from its leadership and members across Kano State.

He cited persistent leadership disputes and legal cases as factors that have weakened the party’s structure at state and national levels.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts,” he said.

According to Yusuf, the disagreements have created divisions and uncertainty within the party, making it difficult to maintain cohesion.

He said his decision followed reflection and was guided by public interest considerations.

“After careful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he stated, adding that the move was taken without ill will.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the Diso-Chiranchi Ward secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, who accepted the governor’s decision and agreed that the party has been affected by internal disputes.

Alongside the governor, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including the speaker, Ismail Falgore, also resigned from the NNPP.

Eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen in the state equally left the party.

The development confirms Abba Yusuf’s planned realignment with the ruling APC, marking a major political shift in Kano State.
