AWCON 2018: Oshoala snubbed for individual honours

Asisat Oshoala may have won the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) title with Nigeria, however, it wasn’t the same joy for the 24-year-old in terms of individual honours.

The reigning African Women’s Player of the Year struggled throughout the competition in Ghana, with all three of her goals coming in a single game against Equatorial Guinea.

Not at her usual predatory best, the ex-Liverpool spurned several goalscoring chances.

She even bottled in when handed a spot-kick against South Africa in the final.

With three goals, she missed out on the top scorers’ award won by Bayana Bayana’s Thembi Kgatlana.

The 22-year-old also beat her to the Woman of the Competition.

Oshoala was also overlooked for the tournament’s best 11.

Just Nigerians – Onome Ebi and goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi in a lineup dominated by five Cameroonians.

Oshoala could only make the bench, alongside Francisca Ordega.
