Uju Anya gay partner Sirry Alang

Nigerian-born American academic Uju Anya, who is in the news for her controversial tweets about the late Queen Elizabeth, is openly gay.

Anya’s partner is Sirry Alang. The associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University mentioned Alang for the first time on Tuesday since her controversial tweets about the queen.

She thanked Alang, who is a medical sociologist, for having her back while many were criticising her for speaking ill of the queen.

Anya said, “…I’d like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to my loving partner Dr. Sirry Alang @ProfAlang and everyone who rallied for me here and elsewhere. Thanks for tweeting, talking, writing/signing support letters, etc. You showed me something very important: I have people.”

The modern language teacher also acknowledged the love she got from Twitter users in Nigeria.

“+234 Twitter, good morning. I give you special thanks for riding hardest for me. My Nigerian people, especially in and from Alaigbo, saw how much I love you and showed me love back. Together we shared our pain and taught the world our history. Thank you. P.S. I am still a gay,” she wrote.

Anya’s partner Alang identifies as she, according to her bio on Twitter.

Alang obtained a PhD from the Division of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. She was also trained at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and at the University of Buea, Cameroon.

Alang has an adopted child, according to a tweet she made on Tuesday morning.

While Anya was being bashed by some Twitter users who found her remarks about the queen distasteful, Alang was on Twitter rooting for her.

She tweeed a report headlined: “Thousands sign petition defending Carnegie Mellon University professor whose tweet about dying queen went viral.”
