Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu on Saturday clocked 54 while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Born on September 25, 1967, in Isiama Afara, Abia State, Mr Kanu is the leader of the group calling for the independence of the south-eastern part of Nigeria which it calls Biafra land.

In June, Kanu was allegedly arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria to continue his trial bordering on treason.

Following his extradition, Kanu was immediately brought before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja who remanded him in the custody of the DSS.

Congratulatory messages have been pouring in on social media since the dawn of the day from Kanu’s supporters.

Publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also celebrated Kanu in an Instagram post.

“Happy Special Birthday Shoutout to the Indefatigable Fighter for Freedom, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as he turns 54 years old today!” he wrote.

After Kanu’s trial scheduled in July suffered a setback and was adjourned till October 21, the IPOB threatened to declare sit-at-home for one month in the south-east if the DSS fails to bring their leader to court on the next hearing.

Meanwhile, Kanu has filed a suit at the High Court in Abia, demanding his release on health grounds. The IPOB leader has also sued Kenya over its alleged role in his extradition.
