The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has given its reason for stopping cinemas nationwide from showing a recently released movie, Sugar Rush.
The film, which has grossed about N160m since its release on December 25, 2019, was directed by Kayode Kasum.
The movie stars Banky W, his wife Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Bisola Aiyeola and others.
It tells the story of three sisters who accidentally discover $800,000 (N288 million) in the house of a corrupt man.
Some movie critics say it portrayed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as incompetent in recovering the money.
It was believed that the stoppage of the movie from being shown in cinemas was connected to EFCC’s image.
However, Executive Director of NFVCB, Adedayo Thomas, said in a statement posted on Instagram that the ban was as a result of communication mishap.
“I, however, take responsibility for the gap in communication and the delay in granting final approval as the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition expired before we could release an official statement due to my preoccupation with extant responsibilities and backlog of movies requiring approval as a result of the December rush,” the statement said.
“I am currently working with the distributor, producer, director and key actors to grant final approval for the resumed exhibition at #cinemas. All hands are on deck and we are committed to serving your entertainment needs within the ambits of the law.”
