Lawan denies shutting media out of budget defence

Ahmed Lawan

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has denied shutting out the media in the budget defence by various committees of the upper legislative chambers.

Reports had said last week that some committees asked journalists to leave the budget defence room for private sessions.

In several tweets on Monday, however, Lawan said it was a misunderstanding.

He added that the Senate’s activities are in the “best interest of Nigeria.”

“Last week, there were several reports that the media has been shut out of budget defence by various committees of the Senate. That was just a misunderstanding. There is no shut out of the press from what we do,” Lawan said.

“We need the press to tell Nigerians what we are doing. Journalists are our friends.

He added: “I want to assure Nigerians that whatever we do in this Senate and indeed in this National Assembly is in the best interest of Nigeria. We will not compromise on anything as far as the national interest is concerned.”
