A 54-year-old nurse, an employee of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja (LASUTH), has died of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Adenike Bakare, who was an Assistant Director, Nursing Services, died on Friday and was buried privately in Lagos the same day.

The source of infection was not immediately clear as LASUTH is not a designated treatment centre for COVID-19, although there have been admissions of COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Adetokunbo Fabamwo, confirmed the death to The PUNCH.

He said, “She worked in the critical care unit of the hospital. You need to speak with the head of that unit to get information about contact tracing regarding the death of Nurse Bakare.”

Chairman, Lagos branch of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Blessing Isreal, was at the burial of the LASUTH nurse.
