Like the rest of the world, Nigerian clubs are taking advantage of the enormous opportunities offered on the social space.

Not as active as their European counterparts, though, a host of domestic teams have taken to social media to interact with their teeming supporters as well as critics.

While Plateau United may be the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, the Jos-based side are nowhere near the most followed teams.

In fact, the Peace Boys are not even ranked among the top 10 despite their ground-breaking feat of last season.

That said, here are the five most followed Nigerian club sides on the three most popular online platforms namely Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  1. Enyimba – 73,753

Not much a surprise as the People’s Elephant flaunt perhaps the most compact structure in the country. Enyimba lead the way with almost 41k active fans on Twitter and an additional 33K on Facebook.

  1. Kano Pillars – 47,959

Coming in a distant second position is another traditional team, ex-champion Kano Pillars. Pillars boast around 32K followers on Twitter, 15K on Facebook and a little under a thousand on Instagram.

  1. FC Ifeanyi Ubah – 30,542

The Nnewi Millionaires may not have managed to clinch the league’s top honours yet, but the club rank amongst the best in the social circle. Like Enyimba, FC Ifeanyi Ubah is inactive on Instagram but parades nearly 13K and 17K Twitter and Facebook active fans respectively.

  1. Rivers United – 28,597

With almost 27K Twitter followers, 2K and below five hundred Facebook and Instagram fans, Rivers United are third. It is an extraordinary feat, considering the Port Harcourt-based side were only reformed just two years ago from a merger between Dolphins and Sharks.

  1. MFM FC – 26,898

The Prayer Warriors brought down fire and brimstone on the league last season, culminating in a second-place finish. Yet, MFM FC seemingly didn’t do too well with their branding. MFM FC have a little under 20K Twitter fans and a combined figure of around 16K on Facebook and Instagram.
