5 evergreen movies to celebrate Iya Rainbow at 75

Iya Rainbow

Veteran Nigerian actress, Idowu Philips, popularly known as Iya Rainbow, clocked 75 on Monday.

One of the wives of late theatre doyen, Hubert Ogunde, Philips was born into the family of Prophet Jacob Adebanjo Ifemade in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State where she attended African Methodist School and Anglican Modern School respectively.

She was later admitted to a nursing school and upon graduation, worked for about 20 years as a nurse before quitting for acting at age 45 after the death of her husband in 1990.

Her stage name Iya Rainbow originated from the Yoruba word Osumare which means rainbow in English.

It was also the name of the theatre group of her late husband.

After years of paying lip service to her Christian faith, the septuagenarian is now a cleric with a church in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos.

To celebrate her birthday, we take a look at five of her evergreen movies.
