Court

Three men, Femi Hassan, 39, Gabriel Benson, 25, and Wasiu Ogunjobi, 19, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to a secret cult, `Eiye Confraternity’.

The accused, of no fixed address, were facing a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms and belonging to a secret cult.

The prosecutor, Insp. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused persons and others still at large conspired to belong to an unlawful society called Eiye Confraternity.

According to Mustapha, the accused men committed the offences on February 27 at about 11.00 p.m. at Gasline area, Ijoko, Ota.

He said that the accused persons conspired to create fears into the minds of residents by threatening people with cutlass, axes and knife.

Mustapha said the offences contravened Section 3 and 5 of the Secret Cult (Prohibition and Special Provision) Act Laws of Ogun State, 1999.

The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Matthew Akinyemi, granted them bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Akinyemi said that one of the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be gainfully employed.

He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government and their addresses should be verified by the Police.

The case was adjourned until April 4, for definite hearing.
