14 men in court over alleged membership of a secret cult

A 25-year-old man, Michael Ogundimu, and 13 others were on Wednesday arraigned before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly belonging to a secret cult.

The men, who all reside in Iyana-Ipaja Area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Romanus Unuigbe had told the court that the accused and others still at large, were found holding an unlawful meeting on December 16 at about 11:04 a.m. at Kolab Brotel, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

Unuigbe said a vigilance group on patrol got a report that some gang members were holding a meeting and disturbing people in the area.

He said that based on the report, the vigilance group went on a patrol of the area and found the men gathered for an unlawful meeting.

According to the prosecutor, the offenses contravened Sections 42 (a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adewale Ojo, granted each of the accused bails in the sum of N100,000 with one surety each in like sum.

Ojo adjourned the case until January 26, 2018, for substantive trial.
