Warri Wolves beat Akwa United 1-0 in the first round of the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League Super 4 tournament played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Wednesday.

The competition which is designed for the three best sides and Federation Cup winner from the just concluded NPFL season will see the teams battle each other in a round-robin manner.

Kelvin Itoya scored the only goal game of the game in the 44th minute to hand league runners-up Wolves a slim victory over Cup holders Akwa.

Nasarawa United forced Enyimba to a 1-1 draw in the other game of the competition.

The Solid Miners stunned the league champions with an equaliser in the 90th minute through Philips Azango.

Enyimba had earlier gone in front after new signing, Joseph Osadiaye, smashed a left-footed free-kick pass a helpless Danladi Umar in goal for Nasarawa.

Enyimba goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai, showed his qualities by producing multiple saves to keep the Aba Elephants in the game.

Wolves currently top the four-team log with three points, followed by Enyimba and Nasarawa both on one each – while Akwa has no point.

The second-round of games will see Wolves face Nasarawa while Enyimba battles Akwa.
