Zenith Bank Plc has reiterated its commitment to sports development in Nigeria, saying it will expand its existing initiatives in the new year.
The chief executive officer and group managing director of the bank, Adaora Umeoji, made this known while speaking on the bank’s involvement in sports sponsorship.
“We are always deliberate with our dealings with sports. We are committed to do it again in the New Year. We are proud of what we are doing and we will do more,” Mrs Umeoji said.
She said Zenith Bank has sustained its support for sports over the years, with a focus on basketball and youth development.
“Over the years, we have made our marks with our sponsorship of sports events, especially basketball, in which the women’s national team in recent times has some of our products representing Nigeria and winning laurels,” she said.
Umeoji added that the bank’s youth development programmes are aimed at building future athletes across different sports.
Zenith Bank is the sole sponsor of the national women’s basketball league.
The bank also sponsors the Delta State Principals Cup and the Headmasters Cup, as well as tennis and swimming at the elite social club level.
The bank has supported basketball for about two decades.
Several players from the sponsored league have gone on to represent the national women’s team, D’Tigress.
D’Tigress won the AfroBasket competition for the fifth consecutive time last year.
Following the victory, Zenith Bank hosted the team at a reception in Abuja.
The bank said it would continue its sports development programmes in the coming year.
