A 29-year-old woman, Stella David, was docked in a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday for allegedly stealing her boyfriend’s two ATM cards and withdrawing N1.2 million from his accounts.
David, a resident of Kamazoa, Kaduna, is standing trial on a charge bordering on stealing.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 12 at the Federal Housing Goni-gora, Kaduna.
Leo alleged that the defendant stole the ATM card belonging to George Martins (her boyfriend) and the complainant and absconded to an unknown destination.
The prosecutor said the complainant noticed on the same date that a debit transaction of N600,000 was made and while he was trying to block his card, he noticed another transaction for a purchase of two phones from his other card.
He said that the complainant reported the matter at the police station and during the investigation, the defendant was arrested and she confessed to having committed the offence.
The prosecutor said one of the cards was recovered from the defendant, while she claimed to have misplaced the other.
Leo said that the offence contravened sections 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 217 stipulates five years ‘ imprisonment for stealing.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted her bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
He also ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant.
He adjourned the case until May 26 for a hearing.
