Woman arraigned for defaming Lizzy Anjorin on Facebook granted bail

A 37-year-old woman, Kofoworola Akanji, has been granted bail by a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly defaming actress and entrepreneur Lizzy Anjorin on Facebook.

Kofoworola was arraigned before Magistrate Wahab Balogun on Wednesday by the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, publication of fake news and defamation.

Prosecution counsel, ASP Haruna Ibrahim, told the court that the defendant and several other bloggers now at large committed the offence between 2023 and 2025.

He alleged that Kofoworola unlawfully published false statements and rumours about the actress, knowing they were untrue.

“She used her Facebook page to publicly display images of the actress in a manner likely to provoke public disaffection,” Ibrahim said.

The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant distributed obscene and corrupting content to gain social media engagement and financial benefits.

The offences, according to him, are punishable under Sections 39, 57 and 150 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Kofoworola pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Her lawyer made an oral bail application, urging the court to grant her bail on liberal terms. In his ruling, Magistrate Balogun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and imposed additional bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned till August 21, for trial.

QEDng reports that the defamation case comes weeks after Lizzy Anjorin resumed her public feud with fellow actress Iyabo Ojo.

The clash reignited in July after Iyabo denied Lizzy’s claim that the N1 billion defamation suit she filed had been dismissed. According to Iyabo, the matter was only referred to an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) session.

“The case has not started; that was just ADR. The judge asked us to settle but she continued defaming me,” she said in an Instagram video.

Iyabo also accused Lizzy of dragging her children into the feud and said, “If anything happens to me or my kids, hold Lizzy Anjorin responsible.”

Lizzy, on the other hand, fired back with a series of videos mocking Iyabo and even reacted coldly to Priscilla Ojo’s pregnancy announcement.
