Singer Reekado Banks has revealed that fellow artiste Wizkid expressed regret over calling him out during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.
The drama happened in October 2020 when Reekado announced the release of their joint song ‘Omo Olomo’ amid the nationwide protests against police brutality.
Wizkid, who had earlier postponed the release of his Made in Lagos album out of respect for the protests, did not take Reekado’s move lightly.
He lashed out at him on X (formerly Twitter), calling him a “fool” and a “clout animal” in now-deleted tweets.
Reflecting on the incident in an interview, Reekado said he had advised his management not to put the song out but they went ahead anyway.
“It was not the nicest. I urged my management at the time not to put it out… It was so bad at the time. I was able to move on from it,” he said.
He explained that the situation made him feel disrespected, but he has since moved past it.
Reekado also disclosed that Wizkid recently visited his restaurant and used the opportunity to apologise.
“Recently, he came visiting my restaurant. We had a little talk and he was a little regretful about it. He was like he shouldn’t have gone that route,” he said.
According to him, Wizkid also spoke about his public fallout with Don Jazzy, stating that he had been edgy lately due to the recent loss of his mother.
“He mentioned his behaviour towards Don Jazzy as well, and he was like we are three people in the game that have only recently lost our moms. He feels sorry about the time, so we are good now,” Reekado added.
The former Mavin Records star said the incident taught him a lesson, adding that he now stands firmly by his convictions.
“So there is not much that I am convinced to do these days that I do not do,” he said.
Wizkid had lost his mother Juliana Morayo Balogun in August 2023. Reekado also lost his mother in 2022, while Don Jazzy’s mother died in July 2022.
‘Omo Olomo,’ the song at the centre of the controversy, was eventually released on October 15, 2020.
