Why we’re celebrating late Adetona at 2026 Ojude Oba festival – Globacom

Awujale of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Adetona

Telecommunications company Globacom has assured that it will honour the memory and contributions of the late Awujale of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Adetona at this year’s Ojude Oba festival.

The 2026 edition of the festival, scheduled for Friday, May 29, at the festival arena opposite the royal palace in Ijebu Ode, is themed “Ojude Oba 2026: Celebrating the Legacy of Oba Sikiru Adetona.”

According to Globacom, the event is dedicated to celebrating the monarch, who died on July 13, 2025, after a 65-year reign.

This year marks the 21st consecutive edition of the festival it has sponsored.

In a statement issued in Lagos, Globacom said its support for the festival over the years was inspired by Oba Adetona’s commitment to preserving and promoting Ijebu culture and traditions.

“For us, this year’s edition is not just about sponsoring the festival as we have done over the past twenty years. It is about celebrating the exemplary legacies of the revered father, Oba Adetona, who spared no efforts to place the festival on an enviable pedestal.”

Oba Adetona is widely credited with expanding the Ojude Oba festival from a local gathering into a major cultural event attended by Ijebu people from different parts of the world and across religious backgrounds.

He became the Awujale of Ijebuland on April 2, 1960, beginning a reign that lasted 65 years until his death at the age of 91.

Globacom noted that the festival has grown into an international cultural attraction that draws tourists and dignitaries from different countries.

The company added that it would continue supporting the festival as part of efforts to promote Nigerian culture and sustain the traditions associated with Ijebuland.
