Singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has explained why she would want to marry a god-fearing man.
The multiple Grammy award winner spoke about her views on marriage in an interview with media personality Angie Martinez.
Tems said she believes marriage can go through difficult times and that people should approach it with the understanding that it will not always be easy. She said this is part of the reason she would prefer a partner who fears God.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?” she said.
She added: “If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times.”
Tems is one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary music artists. Born in Lagos on 11 June 1995, she rose to international prominence after being featured on Wizkid’s 2020 hit single ‘Essence‘, which reached the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned her a Grammy nomination.
She has since won multiple Grammy Awards, including for her work on Wait for U‘, and released her debut studio album Born in the Wild in 2024.
